There have already been 140 data breaches this year!

More than 2.8 million records have been exposed.

You would think by now, stats about data breaches wouldn’t shock us. But a recent check in with the Identity Theft Resource Center’s (ITRC) rolling data breach report gave me pause.

As of February 21, there were 140 data breaches in 2018, which exposed more than 2.8 million records. That’s 140 data breaches in just two months! Data thieves, it appears, never take a break.

The ITRC defines a data as “an incident in which an individual name plus a Social Security number, Driver’s License number, medical record or financial record (credit/debit cards included) is potentially put at risk because of exposure. This exposure can occur either electronically or in paper format.”

You can see the breakdown of industries most impacted in this summary:

If you want a detailed list of companies that suffered data breaches, you can check out that report here.

But, as a former boss once said, “don’t come to me with problems, come to me with solutions.” With that in mind, given that data breaches are a problem that won’t go away, one helpful solution is to run a free Marshal scan.

Marshal is a fast and secure way to notify you when your business is storing sensitive data like Social Security and credit card numbers in your Box, Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive accounts. More importantly, it will tell you if you are still sharing those sensitive file directly or via a public link.

With those data targets identified, you can easily take the next steps to shore up your sensitive data and take action, so your company’s name doesn’t appear on this report at the end of the year.
